Learning communities continue to evolve because of the diverse nature and needs of learners, and the varied communities in which they operate. Learning communities, in particular, elearning communities offer rich and powerful possibilities for dealing with risks and dilemmas that plague education and the 21st century revolution that shifts learning theories from the mode of the individual to the recognition and importance of the social nature of all human learning (Dewey 1938). The formation of elearning communities has been a tool for the collaboration, creation, sharing and communication of knowledge, particularly new knowledge. This reflection investigates my emersion into an elearning community and the analysis of this process toward the creation of new knowledge (edutweet 2009).
Learning communities represent a changing view of learning and theories of human development, it appears to be striking a balance between individuality and social connectedness. We will need to rely on our role as learners in terms of participation, reciprocity, membership, collaboration and creation of new knowledge (Yarnit, 2000,p11).
Below is a link to an educational design for an elearning community developed by a team at the University of Technology, using 'twitter as the hub" , centrally to the design. The design was created by the group that never met f2f and the collaboration to deeper learning was played out live using the model created and presented. This is an indication of the emerging technologies that use the platform of technologies to move to deeper understanding and the creation of new knowledge. http://edutweet.wikispaces.com/
It is a social learning community that is seemingly taking over 'Face book' it is quick 140 characters, its accessable on iphones, PCs, blackberrys etc.
